We are looking for tutors for the Bachelor College course Engineering Design that will be given in quartile 1 Slot C of the academic year 2021-2022.

In the Engineering design course, second year students will work in teams of 5-6 on a design assignment. As a tutor you will supervise 4 of these groups during their group meetings (45 minutes, twice a week). In preparation for each group meeting you are asked to assess their self-study assignments and provide feedback.
Your help is also required during two assessment events on September 28, 2021 and October 29, 2021. Finally, you will assist in the evaluation of the final reports.

All this requires tutor skills, insight in the engineering design assignment, and a good preparation for the project coaching. To prepare for the role of tutor, you will attend the tutor training that will take place on September 2 and September 3, 2021.

Optimization of gas diffusion in porous nanostructures

Efficiency in chemical processes is largely determined by the process of the reagents diffusing to the electrodes and the created product diffusing away from the electrodes. In the case of electrolysis of water, this process is complicated by the gas water boundary. The produced gas will create bubbles which block water from getting to the electrodes.

 

Our goal is to prevent this by designing both an electrode which is itself a porous medium, and an accompanying porous structure surrounding it. These porous structures will require channels with diameters ranging from hundreds of nanometres to several micrometres, which need to be optimized to promote gas diffusion.

Manufacturability is also a challenge. To make a meaningful impact on the worldwide development towards sustainable energy, Prodrive intends to create several square kilometres of electrodes per year.

Intended results

  • Development of a model for the behavior of gas within the porous medium.
  • Determination of the effect of adjustment of parameters on the efficiency of the system.
  • Detection of different parameters that affect the behavior of gas diffusion.
  • Development of production method for electrodes placed on the porous medium.

Conceptual design of air pollution sensor

Air pollution is the single largest, environmentally related global health risk of our time. Awareness of air quality starts with monitoring, for which Prodrive Technologies develops high quality fine particle sensors. Applications can for example be found in cabin air quality control and building HVAC systems.

In addition to measuring the fine particles concentration, knowing the gas composition is also relevant to the air quality. Prodrive is investigating possible ways measuring the relevant gases. The challenge is to find a measurement solution that is accurate, fast responding, maintenance free, and at a price level that is acceptable for automotive applications.

The goal is to develop a concept for a compact and low-cost optical sensing solution for measuring (a selection of) the gasses from the air quality index. The proposed solution should have the potential to be integrated in the already existing fine particle sensor.

Intended results

  • Development of a proof of concept for the optical sensing solution
  • Study of sensitivity to the relevant Air Quality Index (AQI) gases
  • Engineering concept of integration into the existing fine particle sensor

Fine particle production and control in plasma

Fine dust consists of particles in the order of several microns in diameter, which may be suspended in the air and can cause severe health issues when humans are exposed to high concentrations. If fine dust is detected, measures can be taken to minimize concentrations, for instance by filtering or ventilating.

Prodrive Technologies is developing and manufacturing a fine dust sensor to be used in cars to detect elevated fine dust concentrations. Calibration of this sensor using reference particles has proven to be difficult, due to limitations of existing high-quality fine dust detectors. Research shows fine dust can be “grown” and controlled inside plasma vessels at low pressure rather well. The purpose of this project is to research atmospheric pressure fine dust production and control in a plasma.

Intended results

 Judgement on the feasibility of fine dust production at atmospheric pressure in a plasma vessel for usage in sensor calibration.

  • Development of diagnostic methods and data processing to monitor and control the parameters of the plasma (e.g. electron density, electron temperature) and the dust (e.g. concentration, size distribution).
  • Engineering design of a full plasma set-up capable of controlled production of fine dust with custom concentration and size.

In a lot of applications you can find optical research of TNO, for example: in monitoring the size of the hole in the ozone layer, optimizing oil production, mobile phone chips and in non-invasive glucose measurements for diabetics. The Optics Research Group (70FTE) is one of the leading Optics groups within Europe for design and development of high-performance optical solutions.

Our activities mainly focus on the Space & Science Instrumentation and Semiconductor Equipment markets, expanding to other markets, such as optical sensing for Medical Diagnostics, Oil and Gas, Maritime & Offshore, and Defence. The unique contribution of TNO Optics in Space Instrumentation has been widely recognized. We develop, design, build, integrate, test and calibrate optical systems, which have extremely high performance/accuracy and operate in very demanding environments, including ultra-high vacuum, extremely high and low temperatures, extreme dynamic loads, etc. Such environments are encountered in space, inside semiconductor manufacturing equipment, in oceans and oil wells, inside a fusion reactor, or inside a human body.

TNO Optics works closely together with other research groups within the Nanotechnology Cluster in Delft (200FTE), in particular, with Opto-Mechatronics, Space Systems Engineering and Nano-Instrumentation for the development of new instruments for Space and Semiconductor Equipment applications. Combining our knowledge of optics with expertise available in these research groups enables us to offer complete measurement solutions to our customers. Steering and aligning of matter at the microscale is being actively pursued in many areas such as lithography, surface design and bioengineering. To a large extent the reason is the unfulfilled promise of the new applications that could be created from achieving single particle control at each scale. At the materials solutions department within TNO we work in between upcoming technologies and promising applications with industrial relevance. Our department has a large track record of particle synthesis varying in both size and morphology of organic and inorganic particles. Often such particles are found in between amorphous dispersion and emulsion where orderly structures were not taken into account. At present various high demanding applications are requiring that particles are aligned and follow specific patterns which will enable the features needed for a given functionality. In this assignment we aim at combining our extensive experience of particle synthesis with recently acquired state-of-the-art setup for colloidal particle manipulation.

For this internship you might expect tasks such as:

WHAT WILL YOU BE DOING?

The European Space Agency has launched a program for the development of Optical Telecommunication systems. Such systems exploit light (wavelength: 0.85 – 10 μm – frequency: 30 – 353 THz) to transmit information, offering an extremely interesting alternative to the increasing scarce RF spectrum, with an unregulated, extremely broad band.
The TNO Optics and Space departments in Delft (where the project will take place) are heavily involved in this program. One of the technological challenges for the development of these systems is the optical channel multiplexing. In a wavelength multiplexing system, each optical beam contains a communication channel in which the information is modulated by an optical carrier, different for each channel. This can be achieved by means of dispersive elements (Bragg gratings, surface gratings). In these architectures, each optical beam arrives at a different angle on the dispersive multiplexer and by means of diffraction all beams are aligned at the output of the element. If, on one side, the wavelength dispersive characteristic of the grating is used to separate the channels, on the other side, it represents an unwanted effect within each channel.

Metasurfaces of plasmonic and or dielectric nano resonators have emerged in the last years as a new technological platform for the realization of unconventional optical components that can enable the realization of unprecedented instruments and sensors. These surfaces, consisting of arrays of nano resonators, allow controlling the properties of light (phase, polarization and amplitude) at nanoscale.

In this project, we want to investigate the use of nano-patterned metasurfaces with an engineered dispersion that can compensate the one of the gratings. During the project, you will learn more about Space Optical Communication technology; you will learn the theory of nanoengineered metasurfaces and you will be introduced to the design methodology and design tools for these structures. After this preparatory phase, you will work at the design of the required metasurface, based on given requirements. This will give you also the opportunity to learn the use of state-of-the-art electromagnetic CAD tools.

Job Description

Interfacial flows in evaporating liquid droplets can form remarkably
complex deposition patterns of suspended microparticles or polymers.
In this PhD project we will unravel how the flows inside an evaporating
droplet cause the aggregation of the biopolymer collagen, and the patterns formed can be used to control the function of eukaryotic cells.

The project will be carried out in the team of Dr. Hanneke Gelderblom, assistant professor in the Fluids and Flows group at the department of Applied Physics. The team focusses on capillary flow phenomena in liquids containing biological or living matter. The PhD project will be embedded within the Immuno-engineering program of the Institute of Complex Molecular Systems (ICMS). Within the project you will closely collaborate with the Soft Matter and Biological Physics group within the department of Applied Physics and with researchers from the department of Biomedical Engineering, who focus on using structured collagen substrates to study the behaviour of cells in healthy and diseased tissue. Besides research you will also contribute to education. Apart from supervising BSc and MSc students in their research projects, other assistance in education, e.g. in bachelor courses, is usually limited to about 5% of your contract time.
