WHAT’S DIFFERENT ABOUT A TRADING CAREER AT IMC?

IMC trades a wide range of financial instruments, in many different ways. This means we look for different types of traders; from the quantitative minds who enjoy the mathematical side of trading to more operationally focused personalities who thrive on interacting with brokers over the phone.

Our traders share one thing in common, though: they are at their best when solving complex problems. Their insights into global events, market shifts and pricing ensure we always trade in the right place, at the right time.

YOUR JOURNEY AS A GRADUATE QUANT RESEARCHER

Your IMC journey begins with a seven-week global trading traineeship led by our seasoned traders, quants and technologists, during which you’ll link up with graduates from all three IMC regions. You’ll then continue your training in the Amsterdam office for a further two months before joining a desk that matches your specific background and strengths. Where you go from here depends on your strengths and preferences – we’ll help you carve out your own niche as you use your creativity to explore new opportunities in our markets. And you’ll gain real recognition for your ideas and successes along the way.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT

As a graduate quant researcher at IMC, you will

  • Collaborate with traders to evaluate existing models and suggest improvements
  • Build customised analysis tools to explore new research ideas
  • Design mathematical models based on innovative trading ideas
  • Apply rigorous quantitative techniques to solve complex problems
  • Implement these new models and put them into production

REASONS WHY THIS IS YOUR FUTURE JOB

  • You love thinking about complex problems and how to solve them
  • You’re ready to apply your raw mathematical skills in a real-world context
  • You want to have a direct impact on IMC and its success
  • You value curiosity, creativity and collaboration
  • You want responsibility for your own projects and freedom to explore areas of interest

WHAT DO WE LOOK FOR?

  • Advanced mathematical and problem-solving skills
  • A collaborative mindset – at IMC we’re all in it together
  • Strong programming skills in either C++, Java or Python are a plus
  • Master’s or PhD in a quantitative field (e.g. Mathematics, Engineering or Physics).

READY TO APPLY?

Our hiring process, including tips on applying and interviewing with IMC, is described on our website. Now it’s up to you! Apply today to start your journey with IMC.

IMC: JOIN A WORLD-CLASS GLOBAL MARKET MAKER

IMC is a world-renowned market maker with offices in Europe, the US and Asia-Pacific. We use algorithmic trading and advanced technology to buy and sell securities across multiple trading venues. Our vital role, at the centre of the financial markets, provides liquidity for buyers and sellers worldwide.

In the late 1980s, IMC quickly identified the importance of technology in the fast-evolving trading environment. Our passion for innovation continues to drive us today. Although our company has grown rapidly over recent decades, we still approach our work with the same entrepreneurial spirit, with an emphasis on continuous improvement and innovation. We like our people to think for themselves and we give them the responsibility and support they need to make an impact. This means real work as well as dedicated training programmes and mentors.

While we work hard, we also have a lot of fun – whether solving complex problems or taking part in team-building, leisure and sporting activities. IMC also enables its employees to contribute to a better society through our foundation.

Quantitative Researcher

Can you solve this puzzle?

An ant leaves its anthill in order to forage for food. It moves with the speed of 10cm per second, but it doesn’t know where to go, therefore every second it moves randomly 10cm directly north, south, east or west with equal probability.

  1. If the food is located on east-west lines 20cm to the north and 20cm to the south, as well as on north-south lines 20cm to the east and 20cm to the west from the anthill, how long will it take the ant to reach it on average?
  2. What is the average time the ant will reach food if it is located only on a diagonal line passing through (10cm, 0cm) and (0cm, 10cm) points?
  3. Can you write a program that comes up with an estimate of average time to find food for any closed boundary around the anthill? What would be the answer if food is located outside an defined by ( (x – 2.5cm) / 30cm )2 + ( (y – 2.5cm) / 40cm )2 < 1 in coordinate system where the anthill is located at (x = 0cm, y = 0cm)? Fine particle production and control in plasma

Student job

Fine particle production and control in plasma

Fine particle production and control in plasma

Fine dust consists of particles in the order of several microns in diameter, which may be suspended in the air and can cause severe health issues when humans are exposed to high concentrations. If fine dust is detected, measures can be taken to minimize concentrations, for instance by filtering or ventilating.

Prodrive Technologies is developing and manufacturing a fine dust sensor to be used in cars to detect elevated fine dust concentrations. Calibration of this sensor using reference particles has proven to be difficult, due to limitations of existing high-quality fine dust detectors. Research shows fine dust can be “grown” and controlled inside plasma vessels at low pressure rather well. The purpose of this project is to research atmospheric pressure fine dust production and control in a plasma.

Intended results

Judgement on the feasibility of fine dust production at atmospheric pressure in a plasma vessel for usage in sensor calibration.

  • Development of diagnostic methods and data processing to monitor and control the parameters of the plasma (e.g. electron density, electron temperature) and the dust (e.g. concentration, size distribution).
  • Engineering design of a full plasma set-up capable of controlled production of fine dust with custom concentration and size.

Opportunities

At Prodrive it is possible to customize your (parttime) job, BEP, internship or graduation thesis to your interests. For example, as parttime employee you choose an average weekly number of working hours and you can plan these hours in the way that suits your schedule. This can be done because you will have 24/7 access to our facilities, and you can work from home as well. The minimum is 12 hours on average, and this can be scheduled over the weeks. Thus, two weeks of 0 hours due to exams and 36 hours in the week after is possible. Just take care of good communication with your project team; take responsibility.

Gas sensing

Internship

Gas sensing

Conceptual design of air pollution sensor

Air pollution is the single largest, environmentally related global health risk of our time. Awareness of air quality starts with monitoring, for which Prodrive Technologies develops high quality fine particle sensors. Applications can for example be found in cabin air quality control and building HVAC systems.

In addition to measuring the fine particles concentration, knowing the gas composition is also relevant to the air quality. Prodrive is investigating possible ways measuring the relevant gases. The challenge is to find a measurement solution that is accurate, fast responding, maintenance free, and at a price level that is acceptable for automotive applications.

The goal is to develop a concept for a compact and low-cost optical sensing solution for measuring (a selection of) the gasses from the air quality index. The proposed solution should have the potential to be integrated in the already existing fine particle sensor.

Intended results

  • Development of a proof of concept for the optical sensing solution
  • Study of sensitivity to the relevant Air Quality Index (AQI) gases
  • Engineering concept of integration into the existing fine particle sensor

Porous nanochannels

Job

Porous nanochannels

Optimization of gas diffusion in porous nanostructures

Efficiency in chemical processes is largely determined by the process of the reagents diffusing to the electrodes and the created product diffusing away from the electrodes. In the case of electrolysis of water, this process is complicated by the gas water boundary. The produced gas will create bubbles which block water from getting to the electrodes.

Our goal is to prevent this by designing both an electrode which is itself a porous medium, and an accompanying porous structure surrounding it. These porous structures will require channels with diameters ranging from hundreds of nanometres to several micrometres, which need to be optimized to promote gas diffusion.

Manufacturability is also a challenge. To make a meaningful impact on the worldwide development towards sustainable energy, Prodrive intends to create several square kilometres of electrodes per year.

Intended results

  • Development of a model for the behavior of gas within the porous medium.
  • Determination of the effect of adjustment of parameters on the efficiency of the system.
  • Detection of different parameters that affect the behavior of gas diffusion.
  • Development of production method for electrodes placed on the porous medium.

PhD position Flow-assisted shaping of polymer surfaces for steering cell behaviour

Short Description
Are you eager to work on a pioneering PhD project at the interface between fluid physics, soft matter and bioengineering? Do you enjoy collaborating with researchers from different fields, and combining experiments and theory? Then this position might be for you!

Job Description

Interfacial flows in evaporating liquid droplets can form remarkably
complex deposition patterns of suspended microparticles or polymers.
In this PhD project we will unravel how the flows inside an evaporating
droplet cause the aggregation of the biopolymer collagen, and the patterns formed can be used to control the function of eukaryotic cells.

The project will be carried out in the team of Dr. Hanneke Gelderblom, assistant professor in the Fluids and Flows group at the department of Applied Physics. The team focusses on capillary flow phenomena in liquids containing biological or living matter. The PhD project will be embedded within the Immuno-engineering program of the Institute of Complex Molecular Systems (ICMS). Within the project you will closely collaborate with the Soft Matter and Biological Physics group within the department of Applied Physics and with researchers from the department of Biomedical Engineering, who focus on using structured collagen substrates to study the behaviour of cells in healthy and diseased tissue. Besides research you will also contribute to education. Apart from supervising BSc and MSc students in their research projects, other assistance in education, e.g. in bachelor courses, is usually limited to about 5% of your contract time.

Job requirements

• A master’s degree (or an equivalent university degree) in (bio)physics or fluid dynamics
• Affinity with experimental fluid dynamics/ biophysics/soft-matter physics
• Pro-active and collaborative mentality
• Eager to learn
• Good organization and communication skills
• Fluent in spoken and written English.

Conditions of Employment

A meaningful job in a dynamic and ambitious university with the possibility to present your work at international conferences.
• A full-time employment for four years, with an intermediate evaluation after one year.
• To support you during your PhD and to prepare you for the rest of your career, you will have free access to a personal development program for PhD students (PROOF program).
• A gross monthly salary and benefits in accordance with the Collective Labor Agreement for Dutch Universities.
• Additionally, an annual holiday allowance of 8% of the yearly salary, plus a year-end allowance of 8.3% of the annual salary.
• A broad package of fringe benefits, including an excellent technical infrastructure, moving expenses, and savings schemes.
